Homs City Council takes steps to revitalize historic markets, restore commercial activity

During a meeting between the council’s Beautification Directorate and Property Directorate, alongside the Historic Markets Activation Committee, representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Aoun Association for Relief and the Child Care Association, and some commercial entities, several topics were discussed. These included the re-centralization of transportation within the markets, the allocation of designated spaces for street vendors in the historic markets.

Discussions also covered the organization of bazaars for small projects in market squares to support these initiatives, the placement of signage highlighting landmarks of the historic markets, traffic sign installations to regulate movement, enhanced surrounding lighting of the markets, and the reallocation of spaces for traditional crafts that support tourism around Khalid Bin al-Walid Mosque. Practical steps were also discussed to facilitate the return of jewelers to their shops in the historic markets.

Engineer Musab al-Salloumi, Chairman of Homs City Council, emphasized during the meeting the implementation of practical steps for the return of jewelers to their shops in the Gold Market, as well as taking necessary measures to ensure their return.

Al-Salloumi noted that, in collaboration with the Historic Markets Committee, a fund has been established for the development of historic markets, the solar energy system has been repaired, and round-the-clock security for the markets has been secured in cooperation with the police leadership.
