Weaving rugs and carpets in Hauran... an ancient heritage craft resists fading away

Daraa, SANA- The Arabic rugs and hand-woven carpets production is one of the famous heritage crafts in Hauran region Sothern Syria.

This industry depends on using natural materials such wool and cotton and it is hand-woven on traditional wooden looms.

The importance of this craft comes from being a part of the cultural heritage and a source of income for many families in Houran, in addition to its tourist importance as artistic pieces and folkloric products.

Muhammad Omar al-Hamad, the only remaining craftsman working in this craft in Busra al-Sham city, Daraa countryside, told SANA that despite the decreased demand for this craft in favor of machine-made carpets and rugs, yet it is a major source of income for his family.

Regarding the work mechanism, al-Hamad explained the main steps of carpets production, in addition to the simple equipment used such as wooden looms, second- hand clothes.

The historical researcher, Fathi al-Mikdad, called on concerned authorities to activate and support this industry as part of Syrian folk heritage, through opening centers for this craft.
