Central Bank seizes counterfeit currency, urges against dealing with unlicensed entities

Damascus, SANA-The Central Bank of Syria announced that, in collaboration with the Damascus Governorate Police, it had seized counterfeit currency and uncovered unlicensed individuals and businesses conducting exchange and remittance activities.

The operation also led to the confiscation of counterfeit foreign currencies, including U.S. dollars and Saudi riyals. Citizens have been urged to avoid dealing with any unlicensed entities to prevent potential harm.

In a statement shared via its Telegram channel, the Central Bank’s Media Office stated: “The Bank’s judicial enforcement team, in cooperation with the Damascus Governorate Police, has apprehended individuals and businesses involved in unauthorized exchange and remittance activities. Counterfeit money, including foreign currencies, was seized, and the necessary legal proceedings have been initiated, referring the cases to the judiciary.”

The Media Office added: “The Bank calls upon citizens to refrain from engaging with any unlicensed entities, whether individuals or businesses, for financial exchange or remittance transactions. This is to ensure they are not harmed by counterfeit currencies, which are difficult to detect when dealing with these entities. Additionally, there is a risk of legal accountability if counterfeit currencies are found in their possession.”
