Abu Dhabi, Sept. 28 (SANA) Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh outlined Syria’s fiscal challenges, development needs and ongoing reforms Monday at the 17th regular session of the Council of Arab Finance Ministers in Abu Dhabi.
According to Syria’s Ministry of Finance, Barnieh made several interventions during the meeting in which he addressed challenges facing fiscal policy and reforms being pursued by the Syrian state to improve the efficiency of public financial management and finance development needs.
The session is discussing reports by the council’s secretariat on public finances in Arab countries, along with sustainable financing for resilient infrastructure.
Ministers are also discussing the use of artificial intelligence in fiscal policy and tax administration and developments in the implementation of international tax measures.
The agenda includes a presentation by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development on international tax measures related to base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS). Participants are also discussing coordination of a unified Arab position toward international financial institutions.
The meeting coincides with official events in Abu Dhabi marking the 50th anniversary of the Arab Monetary Fund.The anniversary is being held under the theme “50 Years of Arab Financial Cooperation: Together Toward a More Integrated Arab Financial Future.”
Arab finance ministers and representatives of regional and international financial institutions are taking part in the events, which focus on ways to strengthen economic resilience and address current global challenges.
The anniversary program includes a documentary tracing the Arab Monetary Fund’s history and its work over five decades in supporting monetary and financial stability in Arab countries. A ceremony honoring the fund’s founders and individuals and institutions that contributed to its development is also part of the program.
The Abu Dhabi meetings bring Syria’s fiscal reform priorities into broader Arab discussions covering public finance, development funding, tax administration and cooperation with international financial institutions.
