Damascus, Sept. 10 (SANA) The United States reaffirmed its support for Syria’s reintegration into the global financial system during talks in Damascus between Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh and a U.S. Treasury Department delegation on strengthening financial cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting reviewed the development of Syrian-U.S. relations and cooperation over the past year and a half, with discussions focusing particularly on the financial sector.

The U.S. delegation stressed its continued support for efforts to reintegrate Syria into the global financial system and highlighted what it described as a historic opportunity created by growing engagement between the two countries.

Barnieh thanked the U.S. side for its efforts and technical support over the past period, saying Syria was ready to continue cooperation aimed at developing bilateral financial ties and advancing its integration into the international financial system.

The minister reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to international standards on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT).

He said Syria was working to develop related legislative and regulatory frameworks in line with international best practices as part of its national strategy.

The talks also covered opportunities for cooperation and capacity-building in public finance, tax administration and public debt management.

Barnieh said Syria seeks to engage more openly with the world and build international financial relations based on trust, reflecting the Syrian people’s values of integrity and transparency.

The two sides agreed to continue dialogue and coordination and build on progress made so far to serve mutual interests and support Syria’s economic and financial recovery.
