Syria signs financial sector assessment project with Qatar Fund and Oliver Wyman

Washington, April 17 (SANA)  Syrian Finance Minister Mohamed Yisr Barnieh signed on Friday a project with the Qatar Fund for Development and consulting firm Oliver Wyman to assess Syria’s financial and banking sector.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdelkader Husrieh, and the Director of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Qutaiba Kadish.

The project is funded by the Qatar Fund for Development, with backing from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the World Bank. It represents a significant step aimed at strengthening the integrity and readiness of Syria’s financial and banking sector for a more robust and effective role in supporting the national economy.

The project aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Syria’s banking sector and non-bank financial institutions, leading to the development of a clear roadmap and action plan to upgrade the financial and banking sector and reinforce its role in financing development.

The Syrian delegation underscored the importance of this project as a key milestone in modernizing the financial sector, expressing gratitude to the State of Qatar and the Qatar Fund for Development for their continued support to Syria.

Minister Barnieh noted that the project is part of a series of initiatives supported by Qatar, beginning with its contribution to Syria’s return to the World Bank’s Arab Group.

He also expressed appreciation to the U.S. Treasury, the World Bank, and Oliver Wyman for their cooperation, which strengthens confidence in Syria’s ability to pursue deeper and more effective institutional and financial reforms.
