Damascus, March 26 (SANA) The Syrian Ministry of Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) on Thursday to enhance cooperation in water and sanitation projects. The agreement aims to improve water services and promote sustainable resource management across several Syrian regions, with a primary focus on the city of Salamiyah and its surrounding countryside in Hama Governorate.

The agreement was signed at the Ministry’s headquarters in Damascus by Taher al-Omar, Assistant Director of the General Water Administration, and Muhannad Obaido, CEO of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Syria. The ceremony was attended by senior ministry officials and the AKDN technical team.

Al-Omar emphasized that the MoU targets the modernization of water infrastructure through the rehabilitation of transmission lines, the construction of new pumping stations, and the installation of storage tanks. Notably, the partnership will also integrate renewable energy solutions to power water treatment and distribution, ensuring high-quality service and long-term reliability for local communities.

Obaido stated that the foundation’s goal is to support government and community efforts to improve access to essential services through sustainable infrastructure that meets immediate regional needs while fostering long-term development.

Ghatfan Ajoub, the Resident Representative of AKDN in Syria, highlighted that this project is part of a broader commitment to the Syrian people. He revealed that the network plans to implement projects valued at over €100 million throughout 2026 and 2027, focusing on providing clean, sustainable drinking water to multiple regions.

Since early 2025, the Aga Khan Foundation Syria has collaborated with government agencies on several vital water projects. These initiatives have already expanded safe water access for hundreds of thousands of citizens, reducing reliance on unsafe sources and easing the economic burden on Syrian households.
