Syria praises U.S. support for reactivating Central Bank’s Fed account

Damascus, Mar.12 (SANA) The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdelkader Husrieh, expressed his appreciation to U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack and his team for their role in supporting the reactivation of the Central Bank’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, nearly a decade after it was suspended.

In a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Husrieh said the reactivation represents a positive signal towards restoring confidence and gradually reintegrating the Central Bank into the international financial system.

He added that the Bank values this cooperation, which opens the door to facilitating banking operations and supporting monetary stability, affirming that Damascus looks forward to further coordination in ways that serve the stability of the Syrian economy and the interests of citizens.

On 28 February, the Central Bank announced the completion of procedures to settle its banking relations with the Federal Reserve in New York, reopen its account, and strengthen Syria’s reintegration into the global financial system.

The U.S. Treasury welcomed the account’s reactivation on Tuesday, the first since 2011.
