Damascus, Feb. 11 (SANA) The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the governments of Italy and Norway have signed a $10.7 million agreement to rehabilitate the Deir Ali power plant in the Damascus countryside in a move aimed at boosting electricity supply in southern Syria.
The project signed in Damascus will focus on rehabilitating Extension II of the Deir Ali facility through urgent maintenance work, the provision and installation of critical spare parts, and the training of technical personnel to ensure sustainable operation and maintenance, according to project details released by the partners.
Deir Ali is one of Syria’s key thermal power plants and has faced significant operational challenges in recent years amid damage, aging infrastructure and limited access to equipment. The rehabilitation effort is expected to restore approximately 120 megawatts of generation capacity.
Officials said the additional capacity would help improve electricity supply for more than 2 million people in the Damascus countryside as well as in the provinces of Daraa, Quneitra and Sweida.
The agreement is part of the Syrian government’s broader efforts, in cooperation with international partners, to support essential infrastructure and public services in Syria, where electricity shortages remain a major challenge for households, businesses and critical facilities.
