Damascus, Jan. 15, (SANA) Syria’s Central Bank Governor on Thursday rejected claims circulating online that the country’s newly issued banknotes are being counterfeited, calling the reports “unsubstantiated rumors.”

Abdelkader Husrieh, governor of the Central Bank of Syria, said in a statement posted on his Facebook page that the bank has not received a single official report from commercial banks, financial institutions, or individuals indicating any cases of forgery involving the new currency.

“In the event that a bank or financial institution reports a counterfeiting case, it is handled immediately in coordination with relevant authorities at the Ministry of Interior,” Husrieh added.

He warned that reports spreading on social media and in public discourse are, so far, based on misinformation, fear, or confusion, and lack any official sourcing. Some claims, he added, may be aimed at attracting attention rather than reflecting facts.

Husrieh urged the public to verify information and rely solely on statements issued by the Central Bank, stressing that responsible information-sharing is essential to maintaining financial stability and avoiding unnecessary public anxiety. He also called on citizens and institutions to report any suspected counterfeiting cases directly to the bank for prompt investigation.

The governor had said a day earlier that the new Syrian pound incorporates advanced security features designed to make counterfeiting difficult.
