Damascus, Aug. 5 (SANA) Syrian poet and academic Ibtisam al-Samadi has built a literary and intellectual experience that combines academic knowledge with poetic creativity, viewing poetry as a space for exploring human questions of freedom, identity, and society.
In an interview with SANA, al-Samadi said her academic career, which includes a doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Nice in France, teaching at the University of Damascus, and contributing to the establishment of Qasyoun University, broadened her perspective on social issues and enriched her poetic work.
She said there is no contradiction between being an academic and a poet, as research provides depth and precision, while poetry offers freedom and emotional expression.
Al-Samadi described the Syrian revolution as a turning point in her creative journey, prompting her to revisit questions of freedom and humanity. During that period, she published three poetry collections, including a children’s collection, as well as Wa al-Shawq Sha’nuk (And Longing Is Your Affair), which received Italy’s prestigious Tulliola International Prize for culture and literature.
She stressed that poetry should reflect the impact of major events on people without becoming direct political discourse, adding that its value lies in its ability to create meaning, raise questions, and express genuine human experiences.
Regarding poetic forms, al-Samadi said she does not favor one style over another, noting that classical poetry, free verse, and prose poetry can all achieve renewal when supported by genuine artistic vision. She said the poem should choose its own form, with creativity remaining the essence of the work.
On the digital era, al-Samadi said poetry continues to maintain its importance despite the large volume of online content, emphasizing the role of criticism and media in distinguishing lasting literary works from temporary trends.
Al-Samadi said Arab women writers have made significant progress while continuing to face cultural and critical challenges, stressing that literary value depends on the depth of human vision rather than narrow classifications.
She expressed hope for greater cooperation among cultural, academic, and legislative institutions to strengthen awareness and support intellectual life, announcing that she is preparing a new poetry collection.
Al-Samadi is a member of several literary and cultural organizations, including the Arab Writers Union, the Union of Writers and Journalists in France, and the Arab Thought Forum in Jordan. She has published seven poetry collections, a children’s collection, and an academic book based on her doctoral dissertation. Her works have been translated into several languages, and she has received numerous literary awards.
