Syria and Belarus discuss cooperation in water resources sector

Damascus, SANA- Minister of Water Resources Kamal al-Sheikha discussed on Monday with the Belarusian Ambassador in Damascus Alexander Ponomarev and Director General of the Belarusian company Hydrodynamica Mikhail Subbotin possibilities of enhancing cooperation in the water resources sector.

Al-Sheikha pointed out the broad fields of cooperation between the two countries and the possibility of benefiting from Belarus’s expertise and experience in water-related technology, since Syria is on the verge of the reconstruction phase, underlining the difficulties faced by this sector in light of climate change and the fierce terrorist war on Syria which caused damage to the infrastructure including water resources and related facilities.

He pointed out to the possibility of preparing a memorandum of understanding in coordination with the Commission of Planning and International Cooperation to develop future cooperation and come up with new ideas for it.

For his part, Ponomarev stressed the Belarusian government’s interest in developing cooperation with Syria in all fields, particularly the water sector as it has a significant impact on the lives of citizens.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Head of the General Administration of Water Resources Samer al-Ahmad met Ponomarev and Subbotin and presented them with a plan to develop old water-pumping stations.

For his part, Subbotin said that the company is ready to provide deals for pumping stations, adding that his company is seeking to set up a factory in the industrial zone in Hasiya, and that a representative for the company will be appointed in Syria to monitor work and secure supplies.
