Geneva, SANA – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Thursday that he will consult the UN Security Council this evening about intra-Syrian talks.
“The date of the next round of intra-Syrian reconciliation talks will be announced once consultations are held with the UN Security Council,” de Mistura said during a press conference.
“I am going to discuss what would be the best options for the resumption of the talks,” he added, noting that “I’m not in a position now to tell you when they will be announced, but I am going be in a position of doing so after I have briefed and consulted the Security Council this afternoon.”
“For the talks to be credible, there needed to be improvements in the humanitarian situation and the cessation of hostilities”, de Mistura said.
After the meeting of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) on May 17, de Mistura said setting a date for talks depends on several factors, including the holy month of Ramadan, which starts on June 6th, as well as the progress of implementation of the decisions taken by the Group and the humanitarian aid delivery efforts.
