Lattakia, SANA – Syrian Surgeon Fadi Sleiman Noah managed to extract a liposarcoma (malignant tumor in fat cells) weighing 10kg from the abdomen of a 42 year-old patient in Al-Othman Hospital in Lattakia.
Noah told SANA’s correspondent that the patient was complaining from abdominal pains accompanied by recurring constipation and increase in the size of the abdomen, and the symptoms developed into acute pain and recurring vomiting, and an ultrasound revealed a large lump filling the abdominal cavity from the pelvis to the epigastrium.
The doctor said that the lump was exerting pressure on blood vessels and intestines, necessitating surgical procedure, and the lump was revealed after cutting through the peritoneum. The lump was removed completely along with 30cm of the small intestines that were fused to the tumor.
Noah said that the patient is currently stable and doing well, and he stayed at the hospital for only four days following the procedure, and further tests showed no sign of microscopic cancer cells, meaning that the patient has recovered completely.
He explained that liposarcoma arises in fat cells and tissues, and the thigh and the abdomen are the most common areas affected by it, but it can also arise in the next and in the cheeks, with most conditions appearing between the ages of 40 and 60, adding that while its causes are unclear, there may be a relation between it and prior exposure to radiation therapy or chemicals, or family history.
Back in August 2014, Dr. Noah managed to remove a teratoma (a non-cancerous tumor consisting of tissue and components from various types of body cells) weighing 25 kilograms from the abdomen of a 37 year-old woman, who has recovered fully and is now leading a normal life.
