Al-Jaafari: No stability in the region without just and comprehensive peace

New York, SANA – Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that the region will not get stabilized unless a just and comprehensive peace agreement is reached on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions and according to the land-for-peace principle.

“if we want to prevent the chances of war, halt bloodshed, boost chances of peace in our region and combat terrorism within a serious international alliance, the United Nations should work seriously with the states sponsoring the peace process for reviving it from the point it was stopped,” said al-Jaafari, speaking in a statement during a UN Security Council session on “The Situation in the Middle East” on Friday.

He took a swipe at the statements of the delegations of some countries, including that of the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, which tried to divert the attention from the peace process in the region and ending the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories, including primarily Palestine and the Syrian Golan, and rather attempted to target Syria.

Al-Jaafari stressed that the United Nations shoulders a historic, legal and moral responsibility towards implementing its resolutions relevant to the Arab-Israeli conflict whose essence is establishing the Palestinian State with ultimate sovereignty on its entire national soil and the return of Palestinian refugees, citing resolutions No. 181 for 1947 and 273 for 1949 and 194 for 1948.

With the UN acting to the contrary by allowing the establishment of only “Israel” and not abiding by the resolution on the return of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland, the injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people has been doubled, said al-Jaafari.

Concerning the crisis in Syria, al-Jaafari criticized the delegations of some countries that claim care for and shed crocodile tears over the Syrian people’s rights but always fall short of making mention of ending the Israeli occupation of the Syria Golan, which still goes on since 1967, despite the existence of a Security Council resolution to this effect, which is resolution no 497 for 1981.

“Where are these delegations of the human rights law and the international humanitarian law when it comes to the continued Israeli settlement campaigns in the Golan and the suffering of the Syrian citizens languishing under occupation for more than half a century? al-Jaafari wondered.

He continued lashing out at those delegations for failing to express any rejection of Israel’s repression and racial discrimination policies and random arrest campaigns against the people of the Golan and its robbery of the natural resources there, including oil, gas and water.

He also highlighted Israel’s violations committed during the current crisis in Syria in terms of its direct and indirect support for Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists in the disengagement zone in the Golan, jeopardizing the lives of the Golanese people and even the personnel of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
