Tartous, SANA- Marking the occasion of World Environment Day, the Environment Affairs Directorate and Tartous City Council on Monday launched a campaign for cleaning the al-Ghamqa riverbed with the participation of a number of volunteers.
Participating in the campaign, Tartous Governor underlined the importance of this initiative in the health domain, as there are huge amounts of waste in the area which require a regular cleaning, particularly in summer.
Head of Tartous City Council Ali al-Souriti said that the campaign is just the beginning of a more intensive work next week that will be based on the sewage mechanisms and the Directorate of Technical Services and the public construction institutions.
Al-Souriti underlined the importance of the regular cleaning of the riverbed in each area starting from its source in Safita.
Al-Ghamqa River is 50 km long and the last campaign for cleaning its stream was organized last month and it stopped due to the heavy rainfalls.
On June 5th, the world celebrates the Environment Day through carrying out several activities that focus on protecting and improving the environment.
