Meeting of Foreign ministers of countries guaranteeing the Astana process on sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s 79th session

Moscow,SANA- Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov of Russia, Abbas Araghchi of Iran and Hakan Fidan of Turkey met in New York to discuss developments in Syria and the region.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the participants in the meeting held on Friday , on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York reaffirmed their commitment to continue joint efforts within the framework of the Astana process to achieve a solution in Syria, based on respect for its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

They also stressed the importance of coordinating a date for the 22nd international meeting on Syria in cooperation with the authorities of Kazakhstan.

In a separate context, the foreign ministers condemned Israel’s indiscriminate air strikes against Syrian territory, calling them a flagrant violation of international law.

They also stressed that these actions aggravate the escalation in Palestine and Lebanon, and affect regional stability.

They also stressed the need to increase international support for the reconstruction of Syria and to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees. In this context, they highlighted the negative impact of unilateral economic sanctions imposed on the country.

The statement said the three foreign ministers discussed the issue of providing international humanitarian assistance to Syria without politicization, discrimination or preconditions.

“The foreign ministers of the three countries discussed with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Syria, Geir Pedersen, issues related to the advancement of the political process in Syria and the activation of dialogue efforts for the benefit of the Syrians,” the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded in a statement.
