IAEA Director General says external power supply to Zaporozhye NPP restored

Vienna, SANA-External power has been restored to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said on Saturday.

“External power has been restored to Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (the Zaporozhye NPP – TASS) two days after it lost all access to off-site electricity in the latest incident highlighting the precarious nuclear safety and security situation at Europe’s largest such facility,” the IAEA said in a statement posted on its website.

Grossi said on Thursday that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was again completely disconnected from external power as a result of overnight shelling and was receiving power from spare diesel generators. Senior operations personnel notified agency experts at the Zaporozhye NPP that two sections of lines 50-60 kilometers from the plant “in the Kiev-controlled territory” were damaged. The generators turned on automatically after the plant disconnected from a 750 kilovolt (kV) main power line and a 330 kV back-up line.

On the same day, Renat Karchaa, an adviser to the CEO of Russia’s Rosenergoatom, said that Ukraine disconnected two transmission lines through which the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant received electricity, resulting in two power units no longer supplying heat to homes in Energodar.
