Syria renews call for lifting unjust US embargo imposed on Cuba

New York, SANA- Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, renewed Syria’s firm and continuous support for the steadfastness of the friendly Cuban people in the face of the unjust and illegal US embargo imposed on them since 1962.

“The Illegal US embargo imposed on Cuba represents a grave breach of the UN Charter and a systematic violation of Cuban human rights, and is considered the longest and most dangerous unilateral coercive measures, and is the main obstacle to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Sabbagh said in a statement before the UN General Assembly dedicated to discussing the Cuban draft resolution on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the US.

Sabbagh added that the Syrian delegation is proud to have consistently voted in favor of the draft resolution that is presented to the UN General Assembly every year, adding that the annual vote on this resolution is a strong message that calls on successive US administrations to lift their unjust measures imposed on the Cuban people.

He affirmed that the Syrian Arab Republic, like Cuba and other countries, is still, to this day, the target of many unilateral and illegal coercive measures imposed by the United States outside the UN framework and international legitimacy.

“It is no longer acceptable for anyone to call for respect the UN Charter , international humanitarian law and human rights without demanding an immediate end to these unjust, immoral and inhumane measures that some States impose on others,” Sabbagh concluded.
