Al-Jaafari: Making political process in Syria a success requires commitment to its sovereignty and territorial integrity

New York, SANA-Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, said on Thursday that making the political process, facilitated by the UN, and led and owned by Syria, a success requires from Security Council to carry out the needed commitments to Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, ending the foreign occupation, combating terrorism and the immediate lifting of the coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people.

“Achieving those goals is the basis and the essence of any political process,” al-Jaafari added during a UN Security council session via video conference on the situation in Syria.

Al-Jaafari stressed that keeping the international peace and security also requires controlling the practices of countries hostile to Syria and other countries that violate the principles of international law and rules of UN charter.

He stressed that UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pederen, has to raise his voice loud against the US and Turkish interference in Syria’s domestic affairs and against the coercive measures imposed by the US and European countries on Syria, these measures that contradict and impede the Special Envoy’s mission as they prevent food and medicine from reaching the Syrian people in an inhumane way.

Al-Jaafari expressed Syria’s hope that the logistic preparations for the next meeting of the Constitutional Committee would be completed on time and in a way that meets the requirements of the participation of the national delegation and that the UN takes the necessary health measures to protect the participants from Coronavirus pandemic infection according to the rules required by the World Health Organization(WHO) and the Syrian Health Ministry.

He pointed out that the approach adopted by the Western countries, and their spearhead so-called “co-penholders” during negotiations related to decision no. 2253 a few days ago and pattern of their voting on the draft resolutions submitted by Russia uncover once again the false allegations of those countries in the humanitarian commitment.

Al-Jaafari indicated that any professional, objective, and credible report about the effects of the unilateral coercive measures against the lives of Syrians should condemn the policies of countries that impose these measures because the resolutions of the UN, its bodies and agencies are clear in this context.

He  added that millions of Syrians, few days ago, went to Ballot boxes to cast their votes to the People’s Assembly elections for the 3rd legislative term, these elections affirmed the commitment of Syria, as state and people, to continue the work of the state’s institutions, and to thwart the foreign agendas which aim to undermine it.
