Farewell ceremony for outgoing UN Resident Coordinator in Syria

Damascus, SANA-Foreign and Expatriates Ministry held a farewell ceremony for the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Syria Ali al-Zaatari who is wrapping up his diplomatic mission in Syria.

Delivering a speech on the occasion, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Dr. Fayssal Mikdad said Syria is a United Nations founding member with a desire to cooperate with the Organization as to serve the interests of the Syrian people and help end the terrorist war against the country.

Mikdad said that al-Zaatari’s tenure had been marked with positive cooperation to address the problems that have obstructed the efforts to alleviate the crisis-induced suffering of the Syrian people, indicating that the UN achieves hoped-for results when its work is not politicized.

Al-Zaatari, for his part, said that Syria’s relations with the United Nations are ever developing, indicating that work is underway to build these relations on solid bases.

He also thanked the Syrian officials who had cooperated with him during his stint as ambassador.

During the ceremony, Dr. Mikdad awarded al-Zaatari the Foreign Ministry’s shield.
