Damascus, SANA- After more than 5 years of total closure, the Damascus-Homs International highway is available for public traffic after concluding the reconstruction process.
On 15th of May, the international highway was re-opened for the public transportation after the rehabilitation of the northern entrance of Damascus between the Abbassiyen Garage and Baghdad bridge for a length of 17 km.
The strategic dual carriageway was completely out of service since 2013 due to the spread of the terrorist organizations in Harasta and the areas overlooking it, sniping at vehicles and passers-by and causing remarkable material damage to infrastructure .
Much of the road was severally damaged and needed extensive works of reconstruction. Following the terrorists’ surrender and eventual evacuation from the Eastern Ghouta thanks to the successful military operation carried out by the Syrian Arab Army, the government started to repair and rehabilitate what has been sabotaged by terrorists.
The highly-functional highway links the Syrian capital to the central and northern provinces and is considered one of the most vital across Syria.
