Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that delaying the process of reaching a political resolution for the crisis in Syria can’t benefit anyone, stressing the need for all opposition groups to be represented equally during the upcoming talks in Geneva.
In a press conference on Monday, Lavrov said that any further delays in reaching a political resolution for the crisis in Syria can’t benefit any side, lauding the two meetings held in Astana as they paved the way towards a new round of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.
He noted that Russia advised UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to avoid being selective when it comes to forming the opposition delegation which will participate in the Geneva talks scheduled for February 23rd, calling on the UN to correct the mistake of not inviting the “Moscow platform” to the talks.
Lavrov also voiced hope that the new US State Department team will participate in reaching a solution for the crisis in Syria, pointing out to his recent meeting with US State Secretary Rex Tillerson during which they discussed the situation in Syria and fighting international terrorism, something which the Trump administration considers a priority.
