Tehran, SANA – Funeral procession of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani started on Tuesday amidst presence of senior figures and huge crowds.
Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the ritual ‘prayer for the deceased’ in the funeral held at University of Tehran.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani will be laid to rest at the mausoleum of late founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini in southern Tehran.
Very many senior officials and authorities of Iran have also taken part at the ceremony to pay final respects to the renowned Rafsanjani including President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Head of the Judiciary Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, senior army leaders, ministers and others.
The Syrian Ambassador in Tehran Adnan Mahmoud and other ambassadors also participated in the funeral.
The body of late Rafsanajni is being carried towards the mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini south of Tehran and will rest there.
Rafsanjani, Iran’s President from 1989 to 1997, died of a heart attack on Sunday at the age of 83.
The Iranian government has announced three days of national mourning in honor of Ayatollah Rafsanjani.
