People’s Assembly discusses performance of Water Resources Ministry

Damascus, SANA – The People’s Assembly session on Thursday, chaired by Speaker Mohammad Jihad la-Laham, discussed the performance of the Ministry of Water Resources during the current circumstances and its efforts to provide water for all areas.

The Assembly members affirmed the importance of rehabilitating dams and other water infrastructure which were damaged by terrorists in the areas to which Syrian Arab Army restored stability and security as well as implementing sanitation projects in some areas.

Answering the Assembly members’ queries, Minister of Water Resources Kamal al-Sheikha said that the ministry had set up alternative plans to ensure new water resources in all provinces and to address bottlenecks that might happen during summer at an estimated total cost of SYP 16 billion and is seeking to secure the biggest part through donor organizations.

He noted that search is underway to complete the Tigris irrigation project with the Russian Stroy Trans Gas Company, noting that the cost of the project is estimated at EUR 193 million and is planned to irrigate around 200000 hectares.
