UNESCO Director Offers Condolences for Victims of Damascus Church Bombing

Paris, SANA- The Director-General of the (UNESCO) Audrey Azoulay, expressed her heartfelt condolences for the Syrian people in the terrorist attack that targeted Mar Elias Church in Al-Duwailah area of Damascus.

During her meeting with Syrian Minister of Culture, Dr. Mohammad Yassin Al-Salah, at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, Azoulay affirmed UNESCO’s solidarity with Syria in protecting innocent lives and preserving cultural and religious landmarks.

For his part, the Minister of Culture emphasized that targeting places of worship in Syria is a direct attack on the values of diversity and tolerance that have formed the essence of Syrian identity throughout centuries.

The meeting discussed also mechanisms to enhance cooperation between Syria and UNESCO in cultural, educational, and scientific fields.

Both sides stressed the importance of implementing UNESCO’s recent Executive Council decision on Syria, which includes protecting Syrian archaeological sites inscribed on the World Heritage list and supporting the educational sector amid current challenges.
