Ambassador Barrack: President al-Sharaa is a pivotal figure in rebuilding Syria

Washington, SANA- The U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Ambassador Thomas Barrack, described President Ahmad al-Sharaa as “a pivotal figure in the rebuilding of Syria.”

In a special statement to Al-Monitor on Tuesday, Barrack praised President al-Sharaa’s efforts in forming a comprehensive government and his outreach to the West, stressing that the Syrian government is managing the situation in Syria in the best way possible.

Barrack described President Trump’s decision last month to lift sanctions on Syria as “genius,” emphasizing that his administration does not set conditions, impose dictates, or build nations, but has expectations of transparency.

Barrack indicated that Washington’s goal is to remove obstacles to Syria’s economic recovery, to enable the Gulf states, Turkey, and Syrians to make tangible progress.

Barrack noted that the U.S. administration intends to extend its sanctions waiver for Syria until Congress completely repeals the Caesar Act, while Al-Monitor predicted that President Trump will also sign an executive order this week repealing a set of sanctions imposed on Syria since 1979.

The American envoy considered that what his country is doing “is flooding the arena with hope, for even a single drop of hope may be more powerful than a tank full of a bad reality.”
