Finance Minister: Lifting EU sanctions accelerates efforts to build Syrian-European partnership

Damascus, SANA-Dr. Mohammad Yusr Barniyeh, Minister of Finance, has described the European Union’s decision to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria as historic. He stated that this move will accelerate efforts to build a Syrian-European partnership and cooperation based on common interests.

In a statement to SANA, Minister Barniyeh said that the “historic decision issued today by the European Union to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria reflects the European Union countries’ interest in Syria’s stability and recovery, and is considered a new success for Syrian diplomacy.”

The Finance Minister continued, “Last week, a delegation from the European Commission headed by Pieter Wagner, accompanied by Michael Ohnmacht, the Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Syria, visited me. We emphasized the importance of strengthening relations with the European continent.”

He noted that during the meeting, they discussed the European Union’s support for Syrian economic and administrative reforms, and the EU’s contributions to investment and capacity building within Syria.

Barniyeh thanked the European Union, its member states, and its institutions for this decision, which he believes will open broad horizons for economic cooperation and the transfer of knowledge and expertise.
