Journalists Union condemns assault on journalists covering agreement implementation in Sweida

Damascus – SANA-The Journalists Union has condemned the attack Sunday on a group of journalists while carrying out their professional duty of covering the implementation of the agreement between the Governor of Sweida and the and the Druze spiritual leaders in the governorate.

In a statement, the union stressed that targeting journalists during their work constitutes a crime under international laws and conventions that emphasize the need to protect journalists and ensure their safety in conflict and crisis areas.

The union pointed out that armed individuals disregarded the journalists’ clear press credentials and equipment, insisting on attacking them, which represents a blatant disregard for press freedom and the public’s right to access information.

The union called on authorities concerned and the international community to take responsibility for these grave violations, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure such incidents do not recur. It also urged for full protection of journalists in Syria in accordance with related international agreements, primarily the Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols.

The union expressed its appreciation and gratitude to the honorable residents of Sweida who intervened to protect and secure the journalists. It reaffirmed its full solidarity with the journalists affected by this attack and emphasized the need to unite efforts to safeguard press freedom and the dignity of journalists in Syria.
