Head of the EU Delegation to Syria: The new Syrian government wants the best for its ci

Istanbul, SANA- Head of the European Union Delegation to Syria, Michael Unmacht, affirmed the European bloc’s readiness to cooperate with Syria and provide support regarding its priorities and challenges.

Unmacht pointed to the fact that the new Syrian government wants the best for its citizens, unlike the former regime, which had no real will to support the Syrians.

In an interview with Syria TV, Unmacht explained that the situation had changed for the European Union after the criminal regime’s overthrow, where the new government was being formally dealt with, there were periodic meetings with its ministers, furthermore the European bloc saw the Syrian government as an important step towards building the future of Syria.

Unmacht noted that the European Union had changed the nature of its presence in Syria, with relations shifting from a purely humanitarian level to direct political engagement with the Syrian government.

Regarding the sanctions imposed on Syria, Unmacht emphasized that the European Union “does not seek to harm the Syrian people,” stating that “individual sanctions will not be lifted, especially those related to crimes and violations.”

He also noted that humanitarian exceptions would open at the beginning of 2023 and will later be expanded to include the areas of transportation, energy, and the central bank.
