Raqqa, Oct. 14 (SANA) Al-Furat University’s Raqqa branch has completed preparations to resume classes at its main campus early next week after a hiatus of nearly 14 years, while opening a new engineering institute to expand higher education opportunities in the province.
The branch said Tuesday that preparations for the new academic year included transferring students’ files, records and documents from Al-Furat University in Deir al-Zor, rehabilitating and maintaining university buildings and facilities, preparing administrative and teaching staff, and securing the supplies needed to resume academic activities.
Classes resume in stages
Anas Haj Zaidan, director of Al-Furat University’s Raqqa branch, told SANA that classes began earlier this week in the faculties of pharmacy, science and agriculture. Students in the faculties of law, economics, education and arts, as well as those enrolled in the university’s affiliated institutes, are expected to begin classes early next week.
Haj Zaidan also announced the opening of a new engineering institute, bringing the number of institutes at the branch to six. He urged students to attend classes regularly.
University’s return eases students’ financial burden
Students welcomed the university’s return to its main campus in Raqqa after years of absence, saying its presence in the province would help reduce the costs associated with pursuing higher education elsewhere.
Mohammed al-Tajer and Mohammed al-Abbadi said having the university in Raqqa would help students save on living expenses and accommodation, while reducing the need to travel to other provinces to continue their studies.
Range of academic programs
Al-Furat University’s Raqqa branch includes faculties of arts, science, education, civil engineering, agriculture and pharmacy, along with the recently established faculties of law and economics.
The branch also has six technical institutes specializing in agriculture, veterinary medicine, commerce, computing, irrigation and engineering. It additionally operates an open-learning center and a center for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers.
