Cairo, Oct. 1 (SANA) Syria is working to restore its vegetation cover and expand Arab cooperation on environmental protection and wildfire prevention, Minister of Local Administration and Environment Mohammad Anjarani said Thursday.
Speaking at the 37th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment in Cairo, Anjarani outlined environmental challenges facing Syria and their regional impact.
He said Syria had identified national priorities and projects to address climate change and was working to update environmental legislation.
Anjarani told SANA that Syria had resumed its role within the Arab League across several areas, including environmental issues and recovery. He said the Syrian delegation was using the Cairo meeting to highlight the country’s environmental needs and strengthen Arab cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
The minister said he had discussed regional environmental issues with Arab counterparts during both plenary sessions and bilateral meetings, expressing hope for greater coordination and joint projects benefiting Syria and the wider Arab region.
Anjarani pointed to environmental challenges shared with countries including Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, saying their cross-border impact made regional projects and cooperation increasingly important.
Syria rebuilding environmental framework
The minister went on to say that Syria was rebuilding its environmental framework, with efforts over the past 18 months focused on restoring the country’s participation in international environmental forums.
Practical steps have begun, including financing agreements for environmental projects whose results are expected to emerge soon, he said.
Anjarani hoped Syria would be able to present concrete outcomes at the council’s next session and share its experience with other Arab countries.
