Damascus, Sept. 2 (SANA) Syria’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Kabawat welcomed a UN decision to establish an international day honoring women searching for missing persons, saying it recognized years of suffering and their persistent pursuit of truth and justice.
The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a Syrian-sponsored resolution on Aug. 31 designating Dec. 19 each year as an international day honoring women searching for the missing.
“Women have always been at the forefront of the search for missing persons around the world,” Kabawat wrote on Facebook on Tuesday, saying they had worked tirelessly to uncover the truth, advocate for legislation and help build institutions.
Kabawat said women from families of missing Syrians remain at the heart of the country’s transitional justice process after years of uncertainty and waiting.
“It is time for their long wait to become a protected right — the right to know and to receive justice,” she said.
The initiative grew out of the experiences of families of missing persons in Syria and was brought before the United Nations through Syrian diplomatic efforts.
