Damascus, June 16 (SANA) Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh held talks with German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Serap Güler on Tuesday on opportunities to deepen economic cooperation, expand investment ties and strengthen financial-sector engagement between the two countries.

According to Syria’s Ministry of Finance, the discussions focused on Syria’s ongoing economic and financial reforms and prospects for greater participation by German companies, banks and financial institutions in investment and development projects.

Barnieh highlighted efforts to modernize Syria’s financial sector and improve the business environment, while encouraging German investors to explore opportunities in sectors linked to reconstruction, development and economic recovery.

The minister also proposed the establishment of a knowledge-transfer and capacity-building center in Syria to support technical cooperation, identify development priorities and facilitate future partnerships between Syrian and German institutions.

The talks included discussions on Syria’s engagement with international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and the potential role such engagement could play in supporting economic reforms and expanding cooperation with European partners.

The two sides also reviewed opportunities for German development institutions to contribute to recovery programs, capacity-building initiatives and investment promotion efforts.

The meeting comes amid a series of Syrian-German contacts aimed at strengthening economic relations. On Monday, Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal al-Shaar met with Güler to discuss ways to expand trade and economic cooperation and promote areas of mutual interest.
