Damascus, June 7 (SANA) Transport Minister Yarub Badr, Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh, and Deir Ezzor Governor Ziad al-Ayesh reviewed the condition of the province’s roads and bridges, damage caused by recent floods and years of destruction caused by the deposed regime, and 2026 maintenance and investment projects implemented by the General Establishment for Road Transport.

During a meeting at the Ministry of Transport in Damascus, officials assessed infrastructure damage and identified urgent rehabilitation needs to maintain traffic flow and improve services, in line with directives from President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

Badr stressed the need to accelerate maintenance work according to technical priorities and strengthen coordination to secure resources and improve road safety.

Al-Ayesh noted that most roads and bridges in the province have significantly deteriorated, requiring expanded paving and rehabilitation projects and the use of modern maintenance technologies.

Participating via video link, Barnieh reaffirmed support for infrastructure projects in Deir Ezzor and continued coordination to secure funding for priority projects. He also revealed a proposal to prepare studies for two new bridges in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor and to rehabilitate the bridges of Deir Ezzor City (Siyasiya) and Mayadeen in accordance with modern international standards.

The Director General of the General Establishment for Road Transport, Muaz Najjar, presented the 2026 maintenance plan for Deir Ezzor, which includes six projects to improve the road network, maintain key routes, and carry out cleaning and drainage works at an estimated cost of 872.7 million Syrian pounds.

He also outlined an additional flood recovery plan comprising four projects, including rehabilitation of the Siyasiya, Mayadeen, and al-Bukamal bridges, maintenance of the Deir Ezzor–Al-Bukamal–Iraqi border and Raqqa–Deir Ezzor roads within the province, and the new Damascus–Palmyra–Deir Ezzor road project. The plan is estimated to cost about 3.965 billion Syrian pounds.

The projects are part of broader government efforts to restore infrastructure in Deir Ezzor, whose roads and bridges suffered extensive damage from attacks by the deposed regime and recent flooding. The province remains a strategic transport hub linking eastern Syria with the rest of the country and Iraq.
