Paris, June 3 (SANA) The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has welcomed Germany’s financial contribution of €500,000 to support the organization’s emergency response programs aimed at safeguarding Syria’s cultural heritage.

According to information published on UNESCO’s official website, Director-General Khaled El-Enany, during a meeting with Germany’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Kerstin Pürschel, said the contribution would enable the organization to expand its operations in Syria. He expressed appreciation for the renewed support, which has been provided in the form of flexible funding, allowing UNESCO to respond rapidly to urgent priorities and needs in Syria within its areas of expertise.

UNESCO said that projects implemented under its emergency program include the protection of the heritage of the city of Aleppo and its museum, with joint support from the ALIPH Foundation and Italy. The organization is also working to combat the looting and illicit trafficking of antiquities and to train national specialists and experts engaged in heritage protection efforts on the ground.

The organization noted that its activities in Syria also extend to the education sector through the “Safe Schools” project, which focuses on training educational personnel to create safer, more resilient and inclusive learning environments.

UNESCO has additionally launched training programs for journalists that focus on fact-checking mechanisms and combating disinformation.

The organization continues to work in Syria and other countries around the world to preserve culture and heritage as part of broader efforts to strengthen community resilience and support recovery and reconstruction. UNESCO also promotes peace and international cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture, communication and information through enhanced international collaboration and support for justice, the rule of law and human rights.
