Damascus, May 23 (SANA) Syria’s Ministry of Energy has condemned an attack on the General Establishment for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Sweida Province carried out by “outlaw groups” and called for stronger protection of employees and essential public services.
The ministry denounced acts of intimidation and threats against staff, including threats of kidnapping while workers were carrying out their duties.
Taher al-Omar, director general of the establishment, told SANA that targeting personnel in essential service institutions directly disrupts citizens’ daily lives and undermines the stability and continuity of services in Sweida.
He stressed that the water sector is a core component of public welfare and human security, noting that employees continue to work under difficult conditions to serve all residents without exception. He urged that service workers be protected and supported rather than subjected to intimidation or attack.
Al-Omar also called on local community organizations and stakeholders in Sweida to help safeguard public institutions and ensure the uninterrupted operation of essential facilities, warning that disruptions harm the public interest.
