Damascus, May 22 (SANA) Syria’s Interior Ministry announced Friday that authorities arrested former military police sergeant Mohammad Imad Mahrez, who served as a guard and jailer at Saydnaya military prison from 2015 during the era of the deposed regime.
Competent authorities were continuing investigations into the arrested to determine the practices attributed to him and pursue legal measures accordingly, the ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, the arrest comes within ongoing efforts by the Interior Ministry and relevant authorities to pursue and hold accountable those accused of committing crimes and violations against Syrians during the ousted regime period, in line with principles of transitional justice and preventing impunity.
The ministry added that authorities were seeking to guarantee the rights of victims and their families through legal accountability measures.
