Cairo, April 4 (SANA) – Syria is participating in the 104th session of the Board of Directors of the Arab Labor Organization (ALO), currently held in Cairo, with a delegation headed by Fawaz al-Ahmad, head of the General Federation of Trade Unions.
The session, which opened Saturday, brings together representatives of Arab governments, employers and workers, along with participants from the League of Arab States.
Discussions focus on the organization’s proposed work plan and budget for 2027–2028, aimed at defining priorities and directing resources toward programs that support labor and production sectors across Arab countries. The meeting also reviews reports by the organization’s specialized committees, including those addressing legal expertise and trade union freedoms.
In remarks delivered during the session, al-Ahmad said the region is facing complex economic conditions driven by overlapping political crises and economic challenges, which have weighed heavily on growth rates and global supply chains.
He noted that these challenges have had a direct impact on Arab labor markets, leading to widespread job losses and declining income levels in several countries.
Al-Ahmad also expressed Syria’s solidarity with workers in Gulf countries, Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine as they confront these economic pressures.
He stressed the need to strengthen cooperation among governments, employers and workers to develop economic and social strategies capable of protecting workers’ rights and enhancing the resilience of Arab labor markets.
The current session is chaired by Egyptian Minister of Labor Hassan Shehata, in his capacity as chairman of the organization’s board, and is being held at the invitation of ALO Director-General Fayez Ali Al-Mutairi.
