Tartous, Feb. 21 (SANA) A gas tanker carrying liquefied gas arrived on Saturday at Baniyas Port, marking the fourth shipment to reach the facility since the start of the week, the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) reported.

The vessel, GAS HUSKY, carried 2,797,109 metric tons of liquefied gas as the government seeks to shore up domestic supplies amid rising demand.

Safwan Sheikh Ahmed, Director of Corporate Communications at the SPC, told SANA that emergency measures had been introduced to meet increased demand for cooking gas. Syria consumes around 170,000 cylinders per day, he said, adding that consumption has recently risen.

In recent days, several provinces have seen crowds at household gas distribution centers due to shortages, which Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir told SANA on Feb. 16 were caused by bad weather that disrupted the docking and unloading of a gas tanker at the port.

Supplies will continue until demand is fully met, with market conditions expected to stabilize by Monday or Tuesday at the latest, Sheikh Ahmed said.

He added that the company has drawn up plans to prevent similar shortages, including contracting firms to rehabilitate the oil terminal to improve unloading operations in various weather conditions and expanding storage capacity to strengthen strategic reserves. Efforts are also under way to restore production at Syrian gas fields, particularly the Conoco gas field, which could help stabilize the market and ease prices.

Earlier, Abdul Hamid Salat, media director at the Ministry of Energy, said household gas supplies were continuing as normal, with around 350 tons entering Syria daily from Jordan while bottling plants operate at full capacity.
