Damascus, Feb. 19 (SANA) Judicial authorities across Syria on Thursday began implementing a general amnesty decree issued by President Ahmad al-Sharaa covering crimes committed before Feb. 18, 2026.
Decree No. 39 of 2026 grants a broad amnesty for offenses committed prior to its issuance. Judicial authorities have started reviewing inmate case files to determine eligibility and to process releases or sentence reductions where applicable.
Officials said judicial administrations are examining prisoners’ records and verifying which cases qualify under the decree’s provisions, while seeking to expedite procedures.
The decree, issued on Wednesday, provides full pardons in some cases and partial sentence reductions in others. It tasks the Ministry of Justice with overseeing its implementation nationwide.
