Damascus, Jan. 23 (SANA) Canada welcomed the support provided by the Syrian government to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in verifying chemical stockpiles, destroying them, and addressing past crimes.
“Canada has long supported the work of the OPCW in Syria, and we welcome the Syrian authorities’ support for the organization’s mission and mandate in verifying chemical stockpiles, destroying them, and addressing past crimes.” Canada’s Ambassador to Syria, Gregory Galligan, stated Friday in a post on “X”.
Galligan shared on his page an OPCW post from Thursday that included the organization’s fifth report on chemical attacks in Syria, confirming that the deposed regime carried out a chlorine gas attack on Kafr Zita in 2016, injuring at least 35 people directly and harming others.
The OPCW stated in its post on “X”: “Syria is cooperating, for the first time, with the organization’s Investigation and Identification Team, granting full access to the country and to information and documents related to the incident.”
On April 21, 2021, OPCW member states decided to suspend Syria’s rights within the organization, including its voting rights, after the OPCW confirmed the ousted regime’s use of chemical weapons in attacks on Latamneh in Hama province in 2017 and in Saraqib in Idleb province in February 2018.
