Dahr al-Qusayr Forest: A Unique Natural and Economic Site in Homs

Homs, SANA-Dahr al-Qusayr Forest in western Homs stands out as a natural reserve of environmental, economic, and tourism value, covering 1,500 hectares at 1,050 meters above sea level. The forest hosts diverse tree species—most notably chestnut, pine, cypress, fir, and cedar—making it a vital recreational destination for locals and visitors.

Eng. Qahtan Ghala, head of the site, noted that chestnut trees account for up to 35% of the area and remain in good condition despite past exposure to “chestnut blight” caused by climate change. Established more than 40 years ago, the forest also plays a key role in protecting soil from erosion.

Daily patrols by forestry guards safeguard the area from logging and overgrazing, while the site’s rich biodiversity—ranging from wild boars and foxes to pigeons and porcupines—enhances its appeal as an ecotourism destination.
