Syrian,Jordanian Economic Relations: A New Phase of Cooperation

Damascus, SANA- Relations between Syria and the Jordan have entered a new phase of economic cooperation.

The Syrian and Jordanian governments have agreed to establish a higher coordination council to enhance joint efforts, marking a significant turning point in the relationship between Damascus and Amman.

The current year of 2025 witnessed a series of official meetings between the authorities concerned in the two countries, which was crowned today in the convening of the work of the “Syrian ‑ Jordanian Joint Economic ‑ Trade Technical Committee” in Amman.

This increasing movement in bilateral cooperation comes in the context of a new phase that Syria is experiencing after the victory of the Syrian revolution and the fall of the deposed regime, which contributed to pushing the wheel of economic relations towards better levels, which was tangibly reflected in the volume of trade exchange, facilitating the movement of transportation and transit, and activating bilateral agreements.

Cooperation between Syria and Jordan has accelerated significantly during the current year, and the economic aspect has been one of the most prominent milestones, especially the agreements concluded in the movement of trade and transportation, and the steps to strengthen economic relations in order to achieve joint development. The most important of these milestones were;

Amman meeting today, July 14, 2025

Today, the work of the “Syrian-Jordanian Joint Economic and Commercial Technical Committee” began in the Jordanian capital, headed on the Syrian side by Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, Eng. Basil Abdul Hannan, and Industry Ministry Secretary-General, Dana Al-Zoubi on the Jordanian side.

The two sides affirmed their commitment to boost economic and trade cooperation and overcome obstacles to developing bilateral relations in a way that would serve their common interests.

Boosting transportation infrastructure

The meeting of the Syrian – Jordanian Technical Committee for Land Transport was held on June 25 and 26, 2025, in Amman, with the aim of strengthening the bonds of joint cooperation in the land transport sector, which contributes to facilitating the movement of trade and passengers, and removing any obstacles facing this sector.

At that time, unified transit fees of 2 percent were adopted in both countries, instead of 5 percent previously, in line with the principle of reciprocity to enhance the movement of passengers and goods.

According to statistics, the number of trucks that entered Syrian territory from Jordan as of December 16, 2024 to July 2 reached about 31,434 trucks. The construction sector topped the list of sectors that exported the most to Syria with about 17,535 trucks loaded with various materials needed for construction, followed by the agricultural sector, which exported 2,323 trucks, then the industrial sector with 2,289 trucks, and the food sector came fourth with 1,265 trucks.

The number of trucks that entered Jordan from the Syrian side during the same period reached 77,632 trucks.

Activating border movement and logistics

To facilitate trade exchange between the two parties, the Jordanian Ministry of Interior decided to keep the Nassib “Jaber–crossing open 24 hours a day, in addition to joint technical steps.

The Jordanian Customs report indicated that the volume of Jordanian exports to Syria increased by 60,366 million dinars, reaching 88,654 million dinars, since the beginning of this year until mid-May, compared to an import volume of 28,288 million dinars.

Memorandum of Understanding and Supreme Coordination Council

On May 29, 2025, a memorandum of understanding was signed between “Damascus Chamber of Commerce” and ” Jordan Chamber of Industry” with the aim of expanding frameworks for trade and investment cooperation and organizing joint economic events.

On May 18, 2025, the Higher Coordination Council approved a general framework for enhancing government cooperation through a Council of Ministers comprising the Ministries of Commerce, Energy, Transport, Health, Agriculture, Water, and others. The Council also approved an action plan to formulate a cooperative roadmap in the fields of investment, trade exchange, transport, industry, agriculture, banking, and food industries.

Additional areas of cooperation

Syrian-Jordanian economic cooperation also included the fields of energy and water, as joint technical sessions were held at the beginning of this July to discuss water shares in the Yarmouk River and update agreements related to water and energy within the joint technical committee.
