The Hague, SANA- The Syrian Arab Republic participated in the 109th session of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), delivering an official statement on the progress made on the ground in addressing the chemical weapons program left behind by the Assad regime, which has inflicted significant damages on the Syrian people.
The Syrian government also indicated that it will soon launch international work groups led by it to end this legacy.
The OPCW leadership noted Syria’s effective cooperation with the international Organization’s Technical Secretariat, including facilitating field deployments, providing logistical support, and contributing to the development of joint implementation plans.
In their various statements, members of the Executive Council, the Director-General of the OPCW, and observer states unanimously expressed their full support and appreciation for Syria’s efforts despite the difficulties. This represents a clear break with the long years of obstruction practiced by the former regime.
The Delegations welcomed Syria’s renewed commitment, particularly following President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s meeting with the OPCW Director-General in Damascus and the historic speech delivered by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani at the previous session of the Executive Council. These countries expressed their encouragement for continued constructive cooperation.
Syria was represented to the session by Ibrahim Al-Olabi, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and Commissioner for the Chemical Weapons file. He delivered the official address on behalf of the Syrian Arab Republic, also thanking the sisterly State of Qatar for temporarily representing Syria’s interests before the Organization.
He also held fruitful bilateral meetings with delegations of Member States from various regional groups.
Syria’s active participation in this forum, along with its commitment to implementing what was agreed upon in these forums on the ground, confirms that New Syria is determined to be a responsible and a leading member of the international community.
