Dujarric: UN teams in Syria ready to support humanitarian response efforts following wildfires in Lattakia

New York, SANA -United Nations announced Tuesday that its teams are participating in the humanitarian response efforts, in cooperation with Syrian authorities, to assess damages resulted from fires that had erupted in the Lattakia countryside.

“UN teams are on the ground, conducting urgent assessments to determine the extent of the disaster and identify immediate humanitarian needs.” The UN News Center quoted Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, as saying at a press release in New York.

The fires that have erupted in northern Lattakia countryside have so far damaged more than 10,000 hectares, in the worst wave of fires that swept the region.

Firefighters are facing significant challenges, including harsh weather conditions, strong winds, rugged terrain, mines and war remnants, the former regime’s neglect of forests, and the lack of fire lines, all of which have posed obstacles to the complete extinguishing operation.
