Top UN delegation appeals for greater aid as 16 million Syrians face hardship

New York, SANA-A high-level United Nations delegation, led by Adam Abdelmoula, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, has issued an urgent appeal to the international community to increase investment in Syria in order to address the immense needs of children and families. The delegation highlighted that more than 16 million people are facing dire humanitarian conditions due to inadequate services and limited funding.

In a statement released by the UN Office in Syria at the conclusion of a two-day visit to the northern governorates of Idlib and Aleppo, the delegation noted that it had met with the governors of both provinces to discuss priorities and explore ways to enhance partnerships and cooperation to assist Syria in rebuilding and recovering after 14 years of conflict. The UN reaffirmed its commitment to support the new government and the Syrian people during this pivotal time.

The delegation also met with internally displaced persons and returnees from both within Syria and abroad to better understand the challenges they face and to underscore the need to prioritize the restoration of livelihoods and essential services, ensuring conditions for safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable returns.

“I have seen firsthand the immense needs of children and families,” Abdelmoula said. “But I was also inspired by their resilience and determination to rebuild and recover from the years of conflict. The Syrian people deserve every ounce of support the international community can offer. Now is the time to act.”

He added, “At this critical moment in history, investing in the Syrian people means a brighter future for the millions who have suffered for far too long. The Syrian people look to us with open hands and hearts full of hope—and we must not let them down.”
