The European Council affirms its commitment to respecting Syria's sovereignty and independence

Brussels, SANA-The European Council emphasized the need to respect Syria’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, in accordance with the provisions of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

This came in a statement issued by the Council, published Thursday on its official website, following a session devoted to discussing developments in the situation in the Middle East, held in the Belgian capital, Brussels.

The European Council welcomed the recent lifting of part of the economic sanctions imposed on Syria, as part of the EU’s gradual and reversible policy. It emphasized the importance of a peaceful and comprehensive political transition in Syria, free from harmful foreign interventions.

The statement stressed the necessity of protecting the rights of all Syrians, regardless of their religious and ethnic backgrounds, without exception, and achieving transitional justice and reconciliation as a pivotal step towards stability.

In a related context, the European Council strongly denounced the terrorist attack that targeted the Mar Elias Church in Damascus, calling for all those involved to be held accountable and subjected to legal penalties.
