Syrian-Jordanian discussions on strengthening cooperation in Communications and information technology fields

Damascus, SANA-Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdul Salam Haykal held a virtual meeting via Zoom with Jordanian Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Eng. Sami Smirat, to explore avenues for joint cooperation in telecommunications and information technology.

The meeting focused on activating Mediterranean submarine cable corridors to serve both countries, establishing alternative routes for communication and internet networks, and leveraging Jordan as a strategic transit hub for internet traffic. Plans were discussed to install cables with a capacity of up to 100 terabytes and integrate them with Jordan’s fiber-optic networks to enhance service sustainability.

Both parties expressed their aspirations for Jordan to become a key internet transit route through Syria to the Arabian Gulf. They agreed to organize a Syrian-Jordanian technology forum for companies operating in the telecommunications and IT sectors, to be hosted in Damascus soon, fostering direct private-sector collaboration.

The Jordanian side affirmed its commitment to mobilizing all available resources to support Syria’s telecommunications and technology sector while facilitating Jordanian companies’ participation in technological and investment projects within this critical industry.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue coordination and strengthen cooperation channels between the two ministries, under the framework of the Higher Coordination Council. A memorandum of understanding for its establishment was signed and activated on May 20 in Damascus.
