International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC): over than 35,000 missing persons documente

Geneva, SANA- International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) reiterated welcome for the formation of National Commission for Missing Persons in Syria.

The committee stressed that the “missing issue” is one of its most important concerns, as it said that the number of missing persons far exceeds what was documented.

“The ICRC has documented more than 35,000 cases since the beginning of Syrian revolution, among them more than 3,000 children”, the committee’s spokesperson, Jasmine Badir said in an interview with Rudaw media network.

She noted that the actual number is much higher, and that these are the only cases that have contacted the committee, stressing that losing contact with one of the family members is one of the most difficult and painful wounds.”

On behalf of the committee, Badir welcomed the formation of National Commission for Missing Persons in Syria, saying that it is a positive first step toward finding solutions for the families of the missing.

She hoped that this commission would bring together all national and international parties and institutions to exert more efforts, adding that the process of searching for missing persons is more difficult, and requires financial resources and specialized expertise.

The spokesperson noted to the difficulties in accessing official records and potential graves, asserting on the committee’s commitment to continuing work with the families of the missing.
